BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb defensive end Ty French and cornerback Raequan Ousley were named to the 2022 Stats Perform FCS All-America Team on Tuesday.
French (Moultrie, Ga. / Colquitt County HS) earned second-team honors and Ousley (Orlando, Fla. / Evans HS) was a third-team selection. French was an Associated Press All-America selection earlier this month.
Ousley is the 88th Division I All-America for Gardner-Webb since the 2000 season and is the first cornerback selected to an All-America team since Cedric McGowan was named honorable mention All-America by the Sports Network (now Stats Perform) in 2007.
Gardner-Webb has produced 121 All-America selections in its senior college history (since 1970).
French, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound junior, was named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year after posting 72 total tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss (minus-97 yards) and a Big South-record 11.5 sacks (minus-72 yards). French added an interception and 18 quarterback hurries to go with a forced fumble.
French was named to the Ted Hendricks Award final Watch List, finished sixth in voting for the Buck Buchanan Award and is a three-time, first-team All-Big South Conference choice. He was named a Hero Sports Freshman and Sophomore All-American earlier in his career.
The standout pass rusher has posted 160 career hits, 37.5 tackles for loss, 24.0 sacks and 42 pressures in 26 career games. He needs only five more sacks to reach the GWU career mark currently held by Super Bowl Champion and Hall of Famer Gabe WIlkins and is one sack away from the Big South's career mark.
Ousley was terrific at corner this season – his first as a starter – earning first-team All-Big South Conference honors. He ranked among the national leaders with 19 pass break ups and finished the 2022 campaign with 56 total tackles (29 solo), two interceptions and 70 return yards.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder also forced two fumbles and recovered one fumble for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The pair helped Gardner-Webb to its first winning season since 2013 and the program's first trip to the FCS Playoffs. It was Gardner-Webb's first playoff appearance at any level since 1992. GWU beat Eastern Kentucky in its first-round game, and was one of only two road teams to pick up a win in this year's FCS playoffs.
French and Ousley also played major roles in helping the Gardner-Webb defense rank in the top-10 nationally in third down conversion defense and team sacks.
Gardner-Webb opens its 2023 season on the road at Appalachian State on September 2.
