BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb (14-10, 8-3) held the league's best shooting team to only 15 field goals and 27.8 percent shooting from the field, and the Runnin' Bulldogs improved on their best start to Big South Conference history on Wednesday night with a 57-45 road victory over Campbell (13-9, 6-5) inside Gore Arena.
Gardner-Webb, who has now won five-straight games for the second time this year, held the Camels to only 45 points, their lowest scoring output of the season. It marks the second time holding a Big South opponent to 45 points or less in its last four games.
D'Maurian Williams led all scorers with 15 points and seven rebounds,
Lance Terry added 14 points and two steals, and
Jordan Sears finished with 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds for the 'Dogs, who shot 42.2 percent overall (19-of-45) on the evening.
Of eight shots Campbell hit in the first half, seven came from downtown as the Camels clung to only a three-point deficit at the half, 28-25. CU went on to hit only two triples in the second half, and seven additional field goals overall, as the Runnin' Bulldogs outscored Campbell 29-20 in the second half to stretch their three-point edge to 12 by game's end, the largest lead of the game.
Coming off a win in which it never trailed, Gardner-Webb led for 36:23 of game play while only looking up to CU for 1:03.
GWU outrebounded the Camels by 10, 39-29, setting the tone early on by recording three offensive rebounds in the first four possessions. The 'Dogs also outscored CU 28-12 in points in the paint, 8-0 on the fast break and 12-8 in points off turnovers.
Gardner-Webb will now look to notch its sixth straight win and claim its longest winning streak of the season when it hosts Charleston Southern at home on Saturday, February 12. Tipoff from Paul Porter Arena in Boiling Springs is set for 2 p.m.
