BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb took an early lead Saturday, but Wofford scored seven runs in the final seven innings to take an 8-3 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs in the second game of a weekend series.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (9-15) plated two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead, taking advantage of a pair of hits and a Wofford error to go in front.
Elijah Bowers and
Curtis Robison had singles in the inning, with Robison scoring on a fielding error later for the 2-1 lead.
Wofford (16-8) wasted little time getting those runs back, putting together a pair of runs in the fourth inning to go up 3-2. John Dempsey and Jack Renwick drove in those runs for the Terriers. Wofford added two more runs in the fifth, another in the sixth and two more in the eighth to cap their scoring for the day.
Gardner-Webb got an RBI double from
Alec Burns in the bottom of the eighth to score Robison all the way from first, but Wofford reliever Coulson Buchanan got a strike out and fly ball to end the inning without further damage.
Bobby Alcock (0-2) took the loss for Gardner-Webb on the mound, working 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs (three runs) on six hits. He fanned five and walked five in his third start of the season.
The Diamond 'Dogs had seven hits in the game, with Robison going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to pace that effort.
Buchanan picked up the win for Wofford, working 5.0 relief innings and allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out nine batters. The Terriers had 12 hits in the game, with Brennen Dorighi going 3-for-3 at the plate.
The two teams will wrap up the series in Spartanburg, S.C., on Sunday at 2:00 pm (ESPN+).
