BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb defeated Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon tallying 16 for their seventh win of the year and third Big South this season, each new program highs.
Eilish Gately led the team with four goals with
Danielle Burke collecting 11 saves to only allow three Blue Hose goals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored the first seven goals of the day, each by a different player, all in the first quarter. During this run, the 'Dogs secured the first six draw controls of the game. Presbyterian netted their first goal late in the first quarter. GWU's
Jada Preston registered the only score during the second quarter, giving the 'Dogs an 8-1 lead heading into the half.
The Blue Hose scored the first goal of the second half, but Gardner-Webb went on to score another seven unanswered. This scoring stretch saw GWU have seven consecutive draw controls. The Runnin' Bulldogs got the game to a running clock in the last minute of the third quarter off a fastbreak goal by
Jessica Vetter who was assisted by
Grace Briggs.
The 13-goal advantage marks the largest win in school history over a conference opponent. The previous record was tied the last Saturday against Wofford.
Preston had two goals and three assists to lead the team in points with five. Gately was next with four, all coming off goals.
Alera Cornett, scored her first career points today, collecting a hat trick in points, two goals and an assist.
Aimie Perino and
Bria Foley each finished with two points.
Heather Lobas had her first-career goal, while fellow defensive starter
Lauren Connor collected her first goal of the season.
Lauren Deaver and
Jessica Vetter each finished with a goal.
Brittany Sherrod,
Hailey Carroll, and
Grace Briggs had an assist each.
Burke posted her fifth-consecutive game with double-digit saves (11). She posted her highest save percentage of the season with a 78.6% mark.
Gardner-Webb ended the game with 15 draw control wins, Martin led the team with five. Gately and Deaver finished with four, while Sherrod had two.
Presbyterian turned the ball over 13 times, nine of these being forced by the Runnin' Bulldogs. Lobas, Connor, and Briggs had two apiece. Burke, Martin, and
Mackenzie Gallery finished with one each.
The 'Dogs were able to collect 20 groundballs, compared to the Blue Hose's 13. Martin led the team with four. Deaver, Lobas, Burke, and
Reese Jones collected two apiece. Gately, Perino, Connor, Vetter, Sherrod, Briggs, Carroll, and
Ella Straub finished with one each.
The next matchup for the Runnin' Bulldogs is on Wednesday, April 20 at Radford (0-6) at 3:00 p.m. looking to improve upon their best season in school history.
