RADFORD, VA – Gardner-Webb continued its historic 2022 season picking up a 17-10 win at Radford on Wednesday. With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs sit in fifth in the Big South and set new season highs in overall wins (8) and conference wins (4).
After a slow start offensively for both teams, the Highlanders broke into the scoring column first at the 6:49 mark in the first quarter. GWU got their first goal off a free-position goal by
Jada Preston a minute later to tie the game.
Bria Foley converted a free-position shot with 2:47 left in the quarter, followed by a score twenty seconds later by Preston after
Maddie Martin won the draw.
Radford was able to tie the game in the second quarter at three, but a pair of goals by
Eilish Gately pushed the 'Dogs lead back to two.
Jessica Vetter scored with less than a minute left in the half to give GWU a three-goal edge heading into the break.
Gardner-Webb tallied seven of the last eight scores in the third quarter. During this stretch, Gardner-Webb was able to score five unanswered and netted a pair of goals in the final 64 seconds.
The final quarter saw the teams each score four goals to close out the afternoon.
Preston led the team with five goals, tying her season-high in this category. She also dished an assist to polish off her six-point performance. Foley and
Lauren Deaver finished the game with three goals, with Deaver adding an assist too, also tying her season-high in goals. Gately and
Aimie Perino each had two goals during the game.
Ciarra Ashworth scored her 10
th goal of the year and had an assist, each coming at the end of the third. Vetter added one goal, marking the first time she has scored in back-to-back games since the team's trip to D.C.
Burke ended the game collecting 11 saves, marking her sixth consecutive game with double-digit saves and fourth with a save percentage over 50%.
Martin led the team with four groundballs.
Grace Briggs and Perino each finished with two.
Mackenzie Gallery and Gately added one apiece. Martin also was tops on the team in draws with seven followed by Deaver with four. Gately and Foley each recorded two as well.
Of the 16 Radford turnovers, five were credited as being caused by the 'Dogs. Briggs, Gallery, Martin, Gately, and
Lauren Connor each had one.
Next up, Gardner-Webb will host Longwood (2-5) on Saturday, April 23 for Senior Day. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
