Women's Lacrosse Has 4 Players Earn All-Conference Honors

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb women's lacrosse had four players receive annual awards from the Big South Conference, as announced on Friday. The team had multiple First-Team selections to the squad for the first time in school history.

Maddie Martin and Jada Preston were both selected to the First Team, Martin as a defender, and Preston as an at-large. For the second team, Heather Lobas and Danielle Burke were named to it.

Martin had collected 48 groundballs, 21 caused turnovers, and 108 draw controls during the season. She surpassed her previous school record for single-season draw controls as well, now owning the top three marks in school history. She ranked in the top-20 in the NCAA in groundballs per game (17th) and draw controls per game (19th). Gardner-Webb had never had a First-Team All-Conference selection that was a defender. Martin was selected as Defensive Player of the Week for the Conference twice this year (2/22, 3/22).

Preston set school records in single-season goals (46) and points (69) ranking in the Top-10 in the Big South for each. In points per game, she was 4th tallying 4.67 each conference matchup. Preston ended the year on a tear, scoring at least five points in five of the last six games of the season. She converted 47.9% of her shots into goals. Her selection onto the First Team flags this as the second-consecutive year that an attacker from GWU earned an at-large spot on the squad. In addition to this selection, Preston earned a spot on the All-Academic Team with a 3.46 GPA in psychology.

Lobas earned a spot on the All-Conference Team for back-to-back seasons, after leading the team in caused turnovers again. This year, she has scooped 40 groundballs and caused 30 turnovers, each new career highs. Overall, she ranks first in the conference in the CTs per game (1.76) and seventh for conference-only games (1.78). Lobas has caused at least two turnovers in the last five games of the year.

Burke is the first goalkeeper from Gardner-Webb to be named to an All-Conference Team after leading the conference in saves per game (10.44) in Big South contests. She was also named Big South Defender of the Week (3/15) after turning away a school-record 18 shots against George Washington. Burke has collected 150 saves this year, collecting at least eleven in seven of the team's nine conference games.

Gardner-Webb will turn its attention to their first-round matchup in the Big South Tournament at #4 Campbell on Saturday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m.
