RADFORD, Va. – Gardner-Webb got the go ahead run into scoring position in the top of the ninth, but Radford held on for a 4-3 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs to even the Big South series Saturday.
Gardner-Webb (11-21, 2-6 Big South) battled on a cold day in the New River Valley, getting a leadoff single in the ninth from
Curtis Robison and a runner in scoring position when a throwing error in right field put the graduate transfer on second base.
The 'Dogs trailed 4-2 at that point and mounted a series threat after
Peter Capobianco singled and
Humberto Torres walked to load the bases.
Alec Burns trimmed the lead to 4-3 with an RBI groundout to first base and the Highlanders intentionally walked the bases loaded with one away.
Ty Burton put out the fire for Radford, striking out the next GWU batter and coaxing a groundout to end the game.
The Highlanders (9-21, 3-8 Big South) did most of their damage in the second inning, scoring three runs on Tanner Barrs' home run to right field.
Gardner-Webb stranded two runners in each of the first three innings, and another in the fourth before getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.
Daegan Brady led off with a single, stole second with one out and moved to third after Capobianco walked and Torres was hit by a pitch.
AJ Jones came through with a big knock, driving in two runs with a single into right field to cut the lead to 3-2.
Radford tacked on a run in the seventh on a wild pitch and an error to take its 4-2 lead into the late innings.
Tyler Switalski (1-4) took the mound loss, scattering five hits over 5.1 innings and only allowing runs on one swing of the bat. Michael Portella and
Kyle Skidmore finished out the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Portella striking out four in 1.2 innings of work.
Robison led Gardner-Webb's 10-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Jones (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Alex Ray (2-for-5) also had multiple hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who left 15 men on base Saturday afternoon.
Radford had just seven hits in the game, with Barrs 2-for-3 day and big three-run blast the difference.
The two teams will wrap up the Big South series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm (ESPN+).
