BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb defeated Wofford 16-7 behind a career-highs in points from
Eilish Gately and
Lauren Deaver. Also,
Maddie Martin secured her 75
th draw control of 2022 to break the school's single-season record in this category, a mark that she set last year with 74.
Gardner-Webb never trailed in the game with Gately scoring the first goal two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. The 'Dogs also scored a pair late in the quarter by
Jada Preston and Gately. The Terriers tallied their first goal in the final second of the first quarter off a free-position opportunity.
The 'Dogs scored nine unanswered between the second and third quarters to stretch out the lead to as much as 12. During this stretch, Deaver, Preston, and Gately all had hat tricks during this 16-minute period. At halftime, the score stood at 11-2, GWU leading.
Gately led the team in scoring with her career-high five goals, followed by Preston with four. Deaver and
Aimie Perino each registered a hat trick, tallying three goals.
Jessica Vetter scored one.
Gardner-Webb recorded their most assist in a game this year with ten. Deaver was first on the team with four followed by Perino with three. Preston,
Heather Lobas, and
Hailey Carroll had one apiece.
The Terriers turned the ball over 15 times on the afternoon, with ten of them being forced by the 'Dogs defense.
Grace Briggs ended the game with three for the top mark on the team with Vetter added two. Gately, Martin,
Lauren Connor,
Brittany Sherrod and
Danielle Burke had one each.
The Runnin' Bulldogs went a perfect 22-22 on clear opportunities, with 15 of these coming in the first half. Martin led the team in draws with four, and Gately added two. Lobas,
Bria Foley, and
Alera Cornett had one apiece.
Gardner-Webb finished the game with 20 ground ball pickups, Lobas led the team with six. Martin was second with four. Briggs, Gately, and Burke added two. Preston, Connor, Vetter, and Perino had one apiece.
In goal, Burke allowed seven goals, only one in each of the first three quarters. She totaled 11 saves, including five in the second quarter.
The win moves the Runnin' Bulldogs to 2-2 within the Big South, the most conference wins the team has had since 2016. Next up, the team travels to Campbell (4-0) for a game on Wednesday, April 13 at 5:00 p.m.
