JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – With time ticking down under four minutes to play on Tuesday night, Gardner-Webb junior
Aymane Sordo broke free and struck for a game winner as the Runnin' Bulldogs took down East Tennessee State by a final score of 1-0 from Summers-Taylor Stadium in Johnson City, Tenn.
Sordo's goal was his second in his last four matches for Gardner-Webb, as the midfielder broke through the center of the defense and lofted a perfectly placed shot just over the sprawling ETSU goalkeeper for the night's only score.
Freshman
Jacob Harris was credited with the winning assist, the first of his career while dawning the Red and Black.
"We did everything we needed to do tonight, and it paid off in the end with what was really a pretty goal from Aymane," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "Our defense played strong again tonight and pitched a shutout, and the offense rewarded them when it mattered most. I'm proud of our guys for battling until the end and picking up another big road win for us before beginning the bulk of our conference schedule."
Tuesday's win extended Gardner-Webb's streak without a loss to four games. Over that span, it posted wins against Queens, VMI, ETSU, and tied with Big South opponent High Point.
Freshman
Javier Ramirez earned his first clean sheet with five saves in the victory. His record improved to 4-1-0 on the season as the first-year keeper continues to shine in between the pipes for GWU.
Overall, the Runnin' Bulldogs' 13 shots were four more than ETSU's nine. It ultimately took the Dawgs four attempts on target before breaking through in the 86
th minute.
Conference play resumes as Gardner-Webb travels to take on UNC Asheville in its next match Saturday at 6 p.m.
