ROCK HILL, S.C. – Gardner-Webb overcame an early deficit at Winthrop on a chilly Wednesday night as the Runnin' Bulldogs picked up their first Big South victory of the season by a final score of 2-1 to extend their unbeaten streak to six.
"We allowed an early goal, but we bounced back, and that's what I'm most proud of," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "The guys buckled down and we were able to put the ball in the back of the net a couple of times before halftime. Aymane did a great job finding the open man, and Owen and Jacob both finished their opportunities. We still have work to do, but we continue to improve and are happy to get three points to finish off this long road trip before returning home on Saturday."
In the 12
th minute, the Eagles' Bryant Jimenez-Pierce found the back of the net on the team's first shot of the evening to give them the early advantage.
Gardner-Webb pulled even with Winthrop in the 24
th minute as
Owen Zaldivar slotted away an opportunity from
Aymane Sordo. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead in the 36
th as Sordo found
Jacob Harris at the top of the box, who struck the ball into the bottom left corner for his second career goal.
In the second half, Winthrop amped up its pressure on the GWU defense, taking nine shots during the period. The Eagles put five of these chances on goal, with Gardner-Webb's
Javier Ramirez saving each opportunity.
In total, there were 35 fouls called between the teams, 19 against GWU and 16 on WU. Gardner-Webb had four players get shown yellow cards while Winthrop had two during the match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' next match is scheduled for Saturday, October 1 at 6:00 p.m. hosting USC Upstate.
