BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up their first loss of the conference season at Campbell on Wednesday night as the Camels picked up their first win in the Big South of the season. The 'Dogs lost 63-58 with
Quest Aldridge leading the team with twenty points.
The Camels hit on a pair of three-pointers at the start of the game to gain an early lead and held onto it for the remainder of the evening. Campbell stretched their lead to as many as nine in the first twenty minutes and took a 32-27 lead into the break after
Anthony Selden hit on a layup in the final minute.
Campbell continued to keep the 'Dogs at distance as they traded baskets for the second half. Aldridge converted a three-pointer and layup in closing minutes leading to the Camels' needing to convert on the late-game free throws for the win.
Selden had 13 points with Nicholas adding 10. Selden pulled down five boards and two blocks on the evening. Nicholas led the team in assists with four. Julian Soumaoro and
Lucas Stieber each had a pair of steals during the game as well. Aldridge led the team making five shots from deep.
GWU finished the game 4-11 at the free-throw line, went 6-21 (28.6%) from behind the arc, and was24-56 (42.9%) from the floor. Campbell finished with a 36-32 edge on rebounds along with 17-11 in assists. The Runnin' Bulldogs got out in transition as they outscored the Camels 9-3 on the break and 34-18 from inside the paint.
Gardner-Webb will return to Boiling Springs on Saturday, January 7 at 2:00 p.m. to host Radford. The Highlanders fell to 1-2 in league play tonight after falling to USC Upstate 65-60.
