CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay outscored Gardner-Webb 28-7 in the second half to pull away for a 41-14 victory on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Austin Peay took an early lead with a 13-play, 79-yard drive to open the game, punctuated by a three-yard touchdown run by Jevon Jackson. Gardner-Webb answered on fourth down on their next drive, as
Jaylen King rushed 56 yards to the endzone, tying the game at seven at the end of the opening stanza.
The Govs drove deep into GWU territory, but two big plays by
Jimmy Bowdry, a tackle-for-loss and a pass break up forced Austin Peay to kick a field goal, retaking 10-7 lead early in the second quarter.
After both teams traded punts, the Govs found their way down to the GWU goal line.
Brice Bass and
Charlie Jackson came up with a big sack, and forced another Austin Peay field goal, keeping the deficit down to 13-7 with 7:19 left in the 2
nd quarter.
Gardner-Webb put together a 16 play, 71-yard drive to end the first half, but the Runnin' Bulldogs missed a field goal attempt in the red zone, and went into the half down 13-7 at the break.
The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the second half with another long drive, but the Governors stopped GWU on fourth down. GWU shut down the Govs on offense, but a pick six by Kory Chapman extended the Austin Peay lead to 20-7 with 10:28 left in the third quarter.
Gardner-Webb bounced back, as King found
Jayden Brown in the endzone, cutting the Austin Peay advantage down to 20-14 in the third quarter. The Govs responded with a drive of their own, punctuated by a seven-yard touchdown pass by Mike DiLello to Brennen Hawkins put Austin Peay ahead 27-14.
The Governors opened the fourth quarter with a deep strike, as DiLello found Jaden Barnes for a 33-yard touchdown pass to swell the Austin Peay lead to 34-14 with 14:03 remaining in the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs looked to respond, but were stopped on fourth down for the second time in the game.
Austin Peay looked to extend their lead, but after a tackle-for-loss and pass break up by Bass, the Governors missed a field goal to keep it a three-score game. Gardner-Webb drove all the way to the Austin Peay 15 yard-line, but a sack and then an interception by Jayden Lyles iced the contest with an interception. DiLello ran into the endzone for a touchdown to give Austin Peay the 41-14 victory.

- The pick-six by Chapman is the first interception returned for a touchdown by an opposing team since Cameron Sims of Mercer did so on Sept. 24, 2022
- Brendan Jackson and William McRainey both finished with 11 tackles. It is the second straight week McRainey has tallied 11 tackles. McRainey now has 283 tackles for his career, passing Daniel Cooke (2005-08) for the tenth most in a career in program history.
- This is Austin Peay's first-ever win over Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs were 2-0 entering the game, winning in 2007 and 2008.
