
Runnin' Bulldogs Seek First Win In Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA- The Gardner-Webb University football team travels to Lynchburg, VA this weekend to take on the Liberty Flames in a FCS vs FBS matchup. The Runnin' Bulldogs are seeking their first win of the 2026 campaign and will have a challenging road test ahead againts the Flames who also are looking for their first win of the season after falling to James Madison last week in their opener 20-13.
Despite falling in the first two matchups Gardner-Webb has effectively moved the ball into the red zone with a strong passing game. Cole Pennington has thrown for over 300 yards in the first two games and will look to continue that streak this weekend. Kory Jones has been the top target so far registering iver 100 yards receiving in the first two games, he registered 135 last weekend against Wofford and he and Pennington will look to continue their connection against a stout Liberty defense.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will also look to establish a consistent run game as Adrian Cormier leads the rush game with 15 carries and 43 rush yards with one touchdown as well.
Defensively Gardner-Webb will look to build on last week after forcing two turnovers against the Wofford offense last week. AJ Mebane forced a fumble and Nigel Lucas picked up the interception. The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to carry that momentum into a mtachup against an offense that moved the ball effectively in their first game of the season throwing for 230 yards.
This marks the 26th matchup between the two teams with Liberty leading the series, 15-9-1, and an 8-4 record at home. The last time the two teams met was in 2022 in Lynchburg where Liberty took a 21-20 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Both teams will come into the weekend looking for their first win and Gardner-Webb will look to find effeciency within the red zone and create turnovers as they take on the Flames on the road.
The game is set to kick off at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at Williams Stadium.
