BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team won their Big South showdown with Longwood University by a final score of 2-1 on Wednesday evening.
Santiago Hoyos and
Max Fisher found the back of the net for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
"Really, really happy with the result today, very disappointed with the last 30 seconds.", said coach Wells. "We showed how young of a group we are. We have so many new guys, so many young guys, we didn't manage the game correctly at the end. That is something that can hurt you in college soccer the margins are so small, but thankfully we got away with the win. I think we deserved to win for sure. One thing that our guys are learning is the game plan, sticking to the details and over in the scouts. Our guys did a really good job today of building out from the back and what we wanted from them at that point, and also pressing who we needed to stop. I was really happy with those things for sure. We talked about not worrying about individual performances today. It wasn't about looking good, it wasn't about looking good, it wasn't about each player looking back on their own performance. It was about making sure we came up with a win. I'm really happy with what that brought in the end."
The game remained scoreless until the 29
th minute as
Odal Brown sent in a cross in to
Santiago Hoyos who scored to put the 'Dawgs on top. GWU took their one goal lead into halftime. In the 66
th minute
Max Fisher sent a free kick into the net on the right side. This was the first goal of his career for Gardner-Webb. Longwood's Desmond Adeyemi cut the lead to one in the final minute of the contest.
"We've been through a lot this season," coach Wells added. "We've been through a lot this season. We've had some really difficult results this season. I think that luck needed to turn and we are due some luck. I think the performances and results have gone the right way for us tonight. We've gotten ourselves back in the4 conference tournament. In reality I told the guys straight away, we're two games aways from the national tournament."
