Lamb has guided GWU to back-to-back conference championships for the first time since 2002, 2003
CHICAGO, Ill. – For the second straight year, Gardner-Webb Head Football Coach Tre Lamb has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award announced on Monday, Nov. 20 by The Analyst.
The Eddie Robinson Award is given annually to the national coach of the year in Division I FCS college football and presented by FedEx Ground. The award, first presented in 1987 and in its 37th season, is named for legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson.
Lamb has helped guide a complete turnaround for the Gardner-Webb football team, guiding the Runnin' Bulldogs to back-to-back conference championships for the first time since 2002, 2003. Under the direction of Lamb, the Runnin' Bulldogs are heading to the postseason for back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history, and finished the regular season undefeated at home for the first time since 2003.
Lamb was also the play-caller for the Gardner-Webb offense this season. The Runnin' Bulldogs averaged 34.7 points per game in conference games, and averaged 354.3 yards per game. The GWU offense has not been afraid to push opposing defenses, as the Runnin' Bulldogs have converted 24 of their 37 fourth down attempts (64.9%), the 14th highest percentage in the FCS and the third-most fourth down conversions in the nation.
Led by the former All-Conference quarterback at Tennessee Tech, freshman Jaylen King emerged as a star for the Runnin' Bulldogs on offense, going 5-1 as a starter and going 86-for-163 with 992 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Folkston, Ga. native was dangerous on the ground as well, rushing for 392 yards and five touchdowns. King was named a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award for FCS Freshman of the Year earlier today.
This is the second straight season Lamb has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award. Lamb was named the 2022 Big South Coach of the Year after guiding the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first conference championship in 19 years and their first-ever FCS Playoff victory with a 52-41 win over Eastern Kentucky.
Lamb joins Chris Wilkerson of Eastern Illinois as the only two coaches from the Big South-OVC to be named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award.
Past recipients of the Eddie Robinson Award include Mark Duffner, Erk Russell, Chris Ault, Jim Tressel, Houston Nutt, Andy Talley, Paul Johnson, Joe Glenn, Mike Ayers, Jerry Kill, Jerry Moore, K.C. Keeler, Deion Sanders, John Stiegelmeier and two-time recipients Mickey Matthews, Sean McDonnell and Craig Bohl.
All 13 FCS leagues, comprised from 15 conferences overall, are represented by a Robinson Award finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced on Dec. 7 and honored at the FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas – the eve of the FCS championship game.
