BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb swept both ends of a Friday doubleheader, beating St. Bonaventure 11-0 and 8-0 at John Henry Moss Stadium.
GAME TWO
Gardner-Webb cranked things up in the second inning of the nightcap, sending 10 men to the plate to power a six-run burst.
Trevor Mattson got things started with a one-out single to center and
Jacob Marcos laid down a bunt single to load the bases.
Curtis Robison took the lid off with a two-run single through the right side and
Alec Burns followed with a two-run double off the fence in center for a 5-0 lead.
An RBI triple from
Jacob McCaskey plated Burns and
Mark Black cleared the bases with a ground rule double to left center for a 7-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb got a double from Mattson and a single from Robison to push the lead to 8-0 in the third.
Casey Young (1-0) was sharp for Gardner-Webb on the mound, throwing only 86 pitches to get through 8.0 shutout innings. Young fanned seven and walked just one while scattering three hits – all singles.
Gardner-Webb had eight hits in the game, led by Robison (2-for-4) and Mattson (2-for-4).
St. Bonaventure starter Kyle Caringi (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Tripp Breen came on to pitch 5.2 solid innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
Three different Bonnies' batters had one hit each.
GAME ONE
Gardner-Webb scored four runs in the first and three more in the second to pull away from the Bonnies in an 11-0 win.
Nate Anderson's two-run single in the first powered that rally and
Jacob McCaskey cranked a three-run home run in the second for a 7-0 lead. A pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the fourth extended the lead to 9-0.
Robison scored on an errant throw to second base to make the score 10-0 in the fifth and Anderson ripped an RBI double off the wall two pitches later to drive home the final run of the game.
Bobby Alcock (2-0) picked up the win, tossing 6.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts. The Lynn, Mass., junior allowed only four hits (three singles) and coaxed eight ground outs.
Gardner-Webb had eight hits in the game, paced by Anderson (2-for-2, 3 RBI), Marcos (2-for-4) and Robison (2-for-3, 3 runs).
St. Bonaventure managed five hits in the game, with five different batters collecting those knocks. Pierce Hendershot had a ground rule double in the sixth.
Bryce Hediger (0-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. He walked four and struck out one.
Gardner-Webb and St. Bonaventure will get back on the diamond Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at Noon (ESPN+).
