Gardner-Webb Completes Weekend Sweep With Two More Wins Over St. Bonaventure

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb completed the four-game series sweep of St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon, beating the Bonnies 7-1 and 8-2.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (10-6) have won nine of their last 11 games.

Timely hitting and clean pitching worked again on Saturday to complete the sweep. Gardner-Webb allowed just three runs combined over four games this weekend.

GAME ONE: Gardner-Webb 7, St. Bonaventure 1 (7 innings)
Gardner-Webb got a complete-game effort from sophomore Tyler Switalski and used a four-run burst in the second inning to take a 7-1 win in the opener of Saturday's double header.

The Runnin' Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits to push an early lead to 5-0.

Nate Anderson doubled off the fence in right to lead off the frame and stole third with two outs. Jacob Marcos was plunked and stole second to put both men in scoring position. Curtis Robinson's infield single up the middle easily scored Anderson and Marcos' hustle allowed him to score as well for a 3-0 lead.

Robison stole second base and scored two pitches later on Alec Burns' double to left. Jacob McCaskey's pop up to right field was dropped, allowing Burns to score for a 5-0 lead that would stand.

Anderson's inside-the-park home run to lead off the third pushed the lead to 6-0 and Switalski worked through the Bonnies' lineup with very little trouble to finish the game. St. Bonaventure scratched across its first run of the series in the fourth – and loaded the bases in the sixth before a double play retired the side.

Robison singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Switalski (3-1) went 7.0 innings, scattered six hits and allowed only one run. He fanned nine and walked two.

Gardner-Webb had eight hits, led by Anderson (3-for-4, HR) and Robison (2-for-4).

The Bonnies got a pair of hits off the bench from Chet Szablewski (2-for-2). Liam Devine (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits with four walks.

GAME TWO: Gardner-Webb 8, St. Bonaventure 2
Gardner-Webb scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to pull away early in an 8-2 series finale win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs collected 11 hits and went deep into the bullpen to get those arms some work after using only four pitchers combined over the first three games of the series.

Trevor Mattson got things going for the 'Dogs in the third inning, leading off with a sharp single to right. The third baseman later scored when Curtis Robison singled to left for a 1-0 lead.

Alec Burns lined a long home run to right field – a two-run shot – later in the inning to plate Robinson. All three runs came with two outs.

Mattson did the damage himself in the bottom of the fourth, driving home Nate Anderson and Peter Capobianco with a three-run blast to left center for a 7-0 lead. Mark Black, who had a single earlier in the inning, scored on a balk for the first run of the inning.

After St. Bonaventure scored runs in the sixth and eighth to break up the shutout, Mattson drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally of the day.

Reid Bertram (1-2) got his second start of the week and earned the win in 3.0 predetermined innings. He allowed just two hits and fanned three in a scoreless start. Michael Portela, Luke Goodyear, Phil Fox and Dalton Strickland each tossed scoreless innings as Gardner-Webb used seven different arms to finish the game.

Mattson (3-for-3, HR, 4 RBI) and Robison (3-for-4, RBI) led Gardner-Webb's offense, with Burns (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) close behind. Six different batters collected hits in the win.

The Bonnies got two hits from Jake Biscailuz (2-for-3) as part of a seven-hit effort in the finale. Gabe Watts (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work. He fanned three and walked one. Four bullpen arms combined to finish the game for St. Bonaventure, allowing just one run and two hits down the stretch.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting UMass at 5:00 pm in John Henry Moss Stadium (ESPN+).
