Foley Leads GWU Charge as Runnin' Bulldogs Fall Short to Conference-Leading Camels on Wednesday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb went toe-to-toe with Campbell, the conference leaders, on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the decision by a 20-16 scoreline. Bria Foley netted a career-high nine points, marking the most by a GWU player since Jada Preston against Delaware State in March of 2019.

In the first half, Campbell built up to a five-goal margin and took a 10-7 lead into the halftime break. Gardner-Webb tallied a pair in the final 34 seconds of the opening half to cut into the Camels' advantage. Preston had the first while Foley had the second where she scored unassisted after winning the ensuing draw control.

The teams started the second half slow with each scoring a one through the first nine minutes. The Gardner-Webb offense then broke loose as they tallied three unanswered, each off assists by Foley to tie the game at 11 all. Campbell's Olivia Ohlmann then netted a pair, but Foley scored another and dished an assist to bring it back even with the score at 13-13.

Campbell got the final score of the period to head into the final 15 minutes leading 14-13. During the final five and a half minutes of the third, the teams combined for eight goals with GWU's Foley having a piece of each of their scores.

The Runnin' Bulldogs tied it up once last time to start the fourth, but Campbell held GWU scoreless for the next nine minutes and got four of their own to pull away and remain undefeated in league play.

Foley led the team offensively as she had four goals and five assists for her record-setting nine points. Emma Duchscherer and Jada Preston had three goals apiece with Preston having the team's lone other assist of the day. Aimie Perino, Rylee Gonzalez, and Lauren Connor each finished the game with two. In addition to her goals, Connor finished with a pair of GBs and CTs with both of her scores coming off free-position opportunities.

Grace Briggs had another strong defensive performance as she had four caused turnovers and four groundballs, leading all players in CTs. Lobas had the game-high in groundballs with five and added three caused turnovers to cap off her stellar day. With the five GBs, she eclipsed 100 for her career and now has 103. Sherrod recorded four GBs on the day to go along with a team-high five draws with Foley right behind at five herself.

Danielle Burke and Lauren Cretella split time between the pipes with Burke playing the first and Cretella in the second. Burke had three saves with Cretella fending off four as they combined to face 34 shots.

Gardner-Webb's attack put 75% (18-24) of their shots on goal and had a 66.7% shooting percentage while holding the trio of Camel goalies that appeared to just two saves.

Gardner-Webb (1-3) returns to action on Saturday as they make the short drive down I-85 to face Wofford (2-3) in another key conference matchup near the halfway point in the season.
