Softball Wins One, Drops One To Radford In Doubleheader
May 05, 2023 | Softball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb raced out to an 8-2 victory over the Highlanders in game one before falling in game two.
Game one started out with a bang for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Kasey Fava laid down a lead off bunt and stole second. Annicka McLaughlin hit an infield single, and brought Adrienne Visintine up with runners on and no outs. The Colorado native hit no-doubt, three-run shot to right field on the first pitch she saw and put GWU up 3-0.
The 1-2-3 hitters teamed up again in the second to add some leverage. Fava and McLaughlin led off with singles and Visintine hit a double to score both of them again and tally her fifth RBI in the game's first two innings. After the Highlanders made a pitching change, freshman Ella Christopher doubled to left field and scored Visintine. Catcher Bridgette Strobl stepped up and hit a single to centerfield and scored Christopher to make it 7-0.
In the bottom of the third, Fava singled again with a bunt and took second on a wild pitch. McLaughlin grounded out, moving Fava to third, and Visintine singled up the middle to score Fava for a third time.
The 'dogs then entered "rune rule" territory, taking an 8-0 lead into the fourth inning, but in the top of the fourth Radford scored twice.
However, this would conclude the scoring for both sides and Gardner-Webb help on to win 8-2.
Reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week, Kalyn Kyle took the circle in game one for Gardner-Webb. She struck out four and only surrendered one earned run in the complete game victory.
Visintine led all batters with a single, a double, a homerun, and six RBIs.
Five Runnin' Bulldogs finished with multiple hits. Fava and Visintine were both 3-4. Christopher, McLaughlin, and Strobl all registered two hits each. Abbey Goodrum also had a single in the first inning.
In game two Radford was the one who took the first swing, scoring a run in the top half of the very first inning.
However, in similar fashion to game one, Kasey Fava reached on an error, Annicka McLaughlin bunted her way to first, and Adrienne Visintine singled down the right field line to tie the game. McLaughlin went on to score on a passed ball and Gardner-Webb took its first lead.
Radford tied it in the top of the second and used a 4-run third inning to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
The Highlanders added another in the fourth, and Gardner-Webb went into the fifth down five.
In the bottom of the fifth, the top of the order came around with two outs. Fava walked and stole second. McLaughlin singled and stole second. Visintine delivered yet again, with a 2-RBI single to right field, but that was not enough to overcome the 5-run deficit.
The freshman Alli Stidham was the starting pitcher for game two and Kalyn Kyle took over in the third inning.
Visintine led all hitters again, hitting a single in all three of her trips to the plate and picking up three more RBIs. McLaughlin had multiple hits as well with two singles.
GWU will honor its seniors in their last action of the season Saturday, May 6, in the rubber match with Radford. Start time is tentatively set for 12:00 P.M. but weather is expected.
