Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Scott Wells Earns First Win as Gardner-Webb Bests Wofford 1-0

Leo Andrade nets game winner as GWU wins season opener

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team defeated the Wofford College Terriers on Thursday evening by a final score of 1-0. First-year Head Coach Scott Wells earned his first victory at the helm of the program.

"It feels unbelievable" said coach Wells. "As an assistant you never realize the pressure of winning games as a head coach. So, I'm just extremely happy for everybody involved. Especially, Dr. Downs and Dr. Goodrich who have put their faith in me to lead the program. A win's a win and I thought we showed some really good signs."

The Runnin' Bulldogs held possession for the majority of the of the contest tallying five shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Leo Andrade scored off a corner assist by Caio Hughes in the 76th minute to put GWU ahead.

"Leo Andrade, a transfer from Pittsburgh, Brazilian, center defender, an absolute warrior and definitely man of the match tonight as well", said coach Wells. "I'm just so happy for him. So happy for all of the boys. I think we did dominate the game. We did from a possession standpoint. But it's the typical first game. Preseason was the same way. We've got to be more clinical in front of goal, because it could have been three or four. I think we had a few penalty shots in there too. Overall, we are creating the chances. We've just got to start converting them. But three points and winning at home is a nice feeling to go home to."

The Runnin' Bulldogs' next match is scheduled for Sunday, at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.
