Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Goal in the Final Seconds Lifts Furman over Gardner-Webb

‘Dawgs concede game winning goal as time expires

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team dropped 2-1 decision to the Paladins of Furman University on Saturday night. Furman tallied the game winner with two seconds left on the clock.

Gardner-Webb generated many scoring chances at the end of the first half with shots on goal coming from Caio Hughes and Santiago Hoyos. Ultimately, it was a scoreless first 45 minutes. Furman's Christian Kraus scored on a quick cross in the 63rd minute, before GWU's Jaylen Orr tallied his first goal of the 2023 season on an assist from Caio Hughes in the 69th minute. The match remained equal at one goal a side until the final two seconds of play when Jake Raine scored to lift Furman over the Runnin' Bulldogs.

"The takeaway is simple.", said coach Wells. "I told the boys before the game and at halftime that it doesn't matter how you play. People do not care if you lose, and we lost tonight. We out shot them 12 to six. I would love to see what the possession was because we had a hold of the ball for pretty much the whole game. I'm really disappointed to get another red card, which we really need to figure out. Credit to Furman. They handled the pressure; they waited and took their opportunities and we didn't. Unfortunately, we have got to go back and regroup, and figure out why we are dominating the ball so much. Why we are having so much joy in the game in terms of our performances but not coming away with the three points. Because that's ultimately all that matters."

The next match for the Runnin' Bulldogs is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Clemson University.
