Gardner-Webb Drops Contest at Clemson

Tigers best the Runnin’ Bulldogs after 90 minutes

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team fell against the Tigers of Clemson University on Tuesday evening by a final score of 7-0. This despite counter attacking chances generated by the Runnin' Bulldogs.

"It's quite difficult to some up in words.", said coach Wells. "It was probably one of the hardest evenings of my professional career. We have a lot of ways that we could use excuses but we can't. We have to face the music. Yes, that is a national tournament team, but we can't allow ourselves to believe that we are seven goals worse. We played JMU; they are nationally ranked. We played a really good first 45 minutes at Wake Forest. And some of the younger guys are starting to learn how small the margins are in college soccer. Mistakes will be punished at this level."

Clemson opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Alex Meinhard scored for the Tigers. Clemson added a two more goals in the first half of play from Nathan Richmond in the 21st minute, and from Pape Mar Boye in the 27th minute. Jackson Worbel added to the lead in the 62nd minute before Isaiah Easley added another in the 64th minute. Gardner-Webb as able to generate a number of counter attacks deep into the second half. One of these led to a shot on goal by Tiago Campos. Clemson ultimately added to their late in the match as Remi Okunlola scored in the 78th minute, and Tyler Trimnal tallied the final score in the 86th minute.

"On one side of it I'm happy that our guys got to experience something like this early on in the season before our conference play but make no mistake, its unacceptable.", coach Wells said. "It is not the expectation of where we want the program to be. We are going to continue to figure out these situations and of course build more depth. We need to get guys healthy again which has been a huge component in our victories."

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return home this weekend. Their next match is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Winthrop for their Big South opener. Saturday's conference opener will not be televised. Live stats of the game will be available on gwusports.com.
