Gardner-Webb Drops Conference Opener Against Winthrop

The Runnin’ Bulldogs open conference play with four-set loss
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team opened Big South play on Saturday, September 23 against conference rival Winthrop University, with an intense four-set loss to the Eagles.
Junior outside hitter Avery Cole led the 'Dawgs with 11 kills while freshman Jenna Otts tailed behind with 10 kills respectfully. Sophomore setter Paige Bernstein added to the kill column with six on a .417 hitting percentage also dishing out 26 assists.
"It's always tough opening up conference with a loss," said head coach Eric Plunkett. "We came out of the gate hitting on all cylinders. Winthrop made some great adjustments and we couldn't quite adjust back."
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-7, 0-1) had one of their season's best sets in set one. GWU erupted out of the gate with 13 kills on 34 attacks with a .382 hitting percentage while committing zero errors on the floor to advance 25-18. The Eagles wouldn't look back, soaring to the end winning the next three sets. Gardner-Webb was close to force a fifth set, opening set four with an early 4-0 lead. Winthrop (2-10, 1-0) sparked a small scoring run to jump in front at 10-9. After the Eagles recovered, the 'Dawgs would trail the remainder of the set despite shrinking the lead at 23-22.
"Their defense both blocking and backcourt frustrated our offense and we didn't respond well", said Plunkett. "We know how tough our conference is and we will be ready to go next weekend."
The Runnin' Bulldogs welcome the Highlanders of Radford University to Paul Porter Arena, Sep. 29 at 6:00 p.m.
