BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team fell to the Beacons of Valparaiso University of Tuesday evening by a final score of 5-2. The 'Dawgs got a pair across on a pair of solo shots.
Alec Burns struck first for the Runnin' Bulldogs hitting a bomb to left center giving GWU the 1-0 early lead. Valpo eventually tied the game in the fifth inning on a wild pitch. The game entered the seventh 1-1 before the Beacons took a one-run lead on a single. Valpo added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Burns was able to tally one more for Gardner-Webb in the bottom of the ninth hitting a deep fly off the roof in right field to make the final 5-2.
Gardner-Webb will return to the field this weekend as they travel to the University of South Carolina Upstate for a three-game series opening Big South play. The first game will be Friday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m.
