SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team played their second of a three-game Big South opening series against the University of South Carolina Upstate on Saturday by a final score of 8-5. The 'Dawgs were able to get five across to tie the game at five before letting up three in the late innings.
The Spartans led the ballgame 4-0 entering the fourth inning. Gardner-Webb began to chip away at the lead with
Peter Capobianco,
Mark Black, and
Ethan Liao bringing home a trio of GWU runs. Upstate homered to go up 5-3 before
Tommy Tavarez answered with a two-run bomb in the fifth to tie the game at five. The Spartans ultimately tallied three more runs late via small ball to win the game 8-5.
Gardner-Webb will complete their three-game series with the Spartans on Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m.
