CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team defeated the 49ers of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Wednesday night by a final of 8-4. The Runnin' Bulldogs came back from down three in the early innings to score eight runs on eight hits.
The 49ers got on the board in the second inning on a two-run blast to center field. They followed it up with a run walked in to take a 3-0 lead in the third frame.
Mark Black got the comeback started for Gardner-Webb in the fifth inning with a long home run to left field.
Ryan Kennell got another across stealing home on a throwing error from second base. The 'Dawgs kept up the small ball in the sixth inning with
Alec Burns scoring on a ground out, and
Humberto Torres coming in on a single from
Nick Capozzi giving GWU a 4-3 lead.
Gardner-Webb went on to put up a four-spot in the seventh inning starting with
Wade Kelly scoring on a wild pitch. Burns reached home on a dropped fly ball, before
Peter Capobianco hit a line drive deep to the right corner that he turned into a standing triple. Torres brought him around to score, and Capozzi went on to single up the middle to bring him home. The 49ers got one back in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-4.
Josh Gentile got the win for GWU out of the pen, and
Devin Pressley closed it down to earn his second save of the year.
Gardner-Webb will return to the field this weekend for a three-game series hosting Winthrop University starting Friday, March 23 at 6:00 p.m.
