BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team took game one of their three-game series against Winthrop University by a final score of 6-4.
Peter Capobianco and
Tommy Tavarez homered as the Runnin' Bulldogs tallied six runs on 10 hits in the ballgame.
The Eagles hit a two-run blast in the first frame of the game. Capobianco got the 'Dawgs on the board with a solo-shot of his own in the bottom of the second. Gardner-Web took their first lead in the fourth inning with
Ethan Liao singling to bring home Capobianco and Tavarez. The top of the seventh saw Winthrop tie the game 3-3 on throwing error to first base. GWU responded with a three-run bottom of the seventh with
Humberto Torres scoring
Alec Burns, and Tavarez hitting a two-run deep fly to left. The Eagles got one back in the ninth before
Devin Pressley earned his third save of the season.
Josh Gentile picked up the win out of the pen with Riley Huge tallying the loss.
Gardner-Webb will continue their three-game series with Winthrop on Saturday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m.
