BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team dropped their rubber match with Winthrop University on Sunday by a final score of 9-4. The Runnin' Bulldogs got four runs on the board on five hits in the ballgame.
The runs came early for the Eagles getting a pair across in the top of the second. They followed that up by putting up a six spot in the top of the third inning on a double, a homerun down the leftfield line, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Trailing 8-0, GWU responded by cutting their lead in half in the bottom of the third.
Humberto Torres singled up the middle to score
Tommy Tavareza and
Alec Burns.
Mark Black then singled to the same location to score Torres and
Peter Capobianco. Winthrop got one more on the board in the sixth inning, ultimately getting the win 9-4.
Gardner-Webb will return the field on Tuesday, March 6 when they take on Western Carolina University at 6:00 p.m.
