BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball squad won games two and three of their weekend series against Longwood University on Saturday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the first game by a final of 8-5, and the second 2-0.
Game one saw two separate lightning delays across nine innings.
Alec Burns hit a two-run bomb in the first inning giving an early lead prior to the first delay. Before the second delay, Longwood scored four in the fourth and one in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. Upon return from delay, Gardner-Webb retook the lead on a passed ball with the bases loaded, and a single each from
Joe Stanzione and
Ryan Kennell. GWU put up two more in the seventh on a single from
Nick Capozzi, and on a ground out from
Wade Kelly that allowed
Peter Capobianco to score.
Bryan Pazos got the win, and Ried Dittner the loss.
Connor Maggi picked up a save.
Game two saw no delays as the Gardner-Webb pitching staff blanked the Lancers from start to finish.
Lawson Knight came home on a passed ball in the fifth inning before
Mark Black was able to double bringing home
Gavin Johnson.
CJ Czerwinski tallied the win, Ethan Walker the loss, and
Devin Pressley his sixth save.
The 'Dawgs will return to the field on Tuesday, April 23 for a road game against the University of North Carolina at 6:00 p.m.
