RADFORD, Va. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team defeated the Highlanders of Radford University on Friday night by a final of 9-1. The game was the opener of a three-game Big South weekend series.
Mark Black got things started in the first frame with a homerun to left.
Alec Burns than came home on a throwing error making it 2-0. The 'Dawgs made it 3-0 in in the second with Burns singling to score Black.
The fourth inning saw GWU extend the lead with a homerun from
Lawson Knight, and
Ryan Kennell reaching home on a wild pitch.
The sixth inning saw Radford tally their lone run of the game on a homerun. Gardner-Webb went back to work in the seventh as
Max Smyley hit a sac fly to score
Humberto Torres. Burns singled in the eighth inning scoring
Gavin Johnson.
The 'Dawgs topped off the performance putting up two more in the top of the ninth.
Peter Capobianco doubled to score Smyley, and Johnson doubled bringing home Capobianco making it a 9-1 final.
Blake Brogdon got the complete game victory, and Scott Rouse the loss.
The 'Dawgs will return to the field on Saturday, April 27 for game two at Radford University for at 2:00 p.m.
