BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team won the first of their three-game series with the Virginia Military Institute on Friday night by a final score of 4-3. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead late in the game, and allowed only four hits and three runs across.
GWU responded to an early 1-0 tally from the Keydets in the bottom of the third inning with
Ryan Kennell coming in to score on a double from
Peter Capobianco.
Matt Ilgenfritz had a night for the 'Dawgs singling to score in the fourth, and singling in the sixth bringing home a pair of RBIs that ended up being the difference in the game.
Gardner-Webb allowed only one more Keydet run to score in the eighth.
Bryan Pazos tallied the win, and Trey Morgan got the loss.
Devin Pressley picked up his fourth save of the year.
The 'Dawgs and Keydets will do battle for game two of the series on Saturday, April 5 at 3:00 p.m.
