ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team fell in their series opener on Friday evening against the University of North Carolina Asheville by a final score of 10-9
Asheville got things started in the first putting up a pair. Gardner-Webb put up three in the top of the second with
Ethan Liao singling scoring
Nick Capozzi,
Lawson Knight scoring on a throwing error, and
Alec Burns singling to bring home Liao.
Max Smyley singled in the third to bring in one before UNC Asheville singled to make it 4-3.
The runs kept coming in the fifth inning with Liao and
Gavin Johnson singling to make it 6-3 Runnin' Bulldogs. The Bulldogs of UNC Asheville responded with a three-run bottom frame to tie the game six all.
Gardner-Webb continued to rely on small ball in the sixth with Capozzi, Liao, Smyley all singling to take a three-run lead right back 9-6. UNC Asheville recorded a pair of singles of the their own to score two making it 9-8.
UNC Asheville tied the game at nine in the eighth inning as Burnett homered to center field.
In the bottom of the ninth, UNC Asheville earned a walk with the bases loaded to walk it off 10-9. Jacob Williams tallied the win, and
JT Inskeep the loss.
Gardner-Webb will continue their road series with UNC Asheville on Saturday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m.
