ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University baseball team fell in their second of a three-game conference series on Saturday afternoon against the University of North Carolina Asheville by a final score of 12-4.
Gardner-Webb got on the board first in the top of the first as
Ryan Kennell reached home on a ground out from
Alec Burns.
Humberto Torres followed it up with a single to score
Lawson Knight to make it 2-0. UNC Asheville tied the game 2-2 in the bottom frame with a sac fly and a double.
UNC Asheville took a one run lead in the second inning prior to hitting a grand slam making it 7-2. A home run and single in the third grew their lead to 11-2.
GWU chipped into the lead in the top of the fourth as
Peter Capobianco tripled to score
Nick Capozzi.
Max Smyley then hit a sac fly to bring home Capobianco making it 11-4.
UNC Asheville got one more across in the sixth inning on a ground out to make it a 12-4 final. Colby Guy got the win, and
Parker Dixon the loss.
Gardner-Webb will close out their road series with UNC Asheville on Sunday, May 12 at 12:00 p.m.
