SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore wing Samson Kpardeh blasted his fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie, while leading the No. 23 Gardner-Webb (10-1-1) men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Wofford (5-6-1) on Tuesday evening. The Runnin' Bulldogs remained perfect on the road after running its record to 6-0 away from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Gardner-Webb held a massive 20-5 advantage on shots but were only able to put four of those on goal. The Dawgs also controlled corner kicks by a count of 6-0.
Scoring chances were plentiful for the Runnin' Bulldogs to begin the game, however, the Terriers defense stood tall while not allowing the game's first score. It looked as if the contest would head to halftime knotted at 0-0, but junior midfielder Felipe Moreira had other plans after rifling a ball into the back of the net with just 10 ticks left in the half.
Wofford was able to even the score at one goal each in the 64th minute following a score from Declan Mettee. However, that tie did not last long after junior midfielder Tiago Campos found Kpardeh in the box for a solid strike past the Wofford keeper.
From that point, the game was all academic as the Gardner-Webb defense held the Terriers without a shot on goal the remaining 23 minutes of game time.
Senior Alan Horrocks went the distance in goal for GWU, allowing one score while collecting a pair of saves.
Gardner-Webb returns to conference play on Saturday, October 11, traveling to take on the Highlanders of Radford University. Kick off for that contest is slated for 2 p.m.
