BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb (10-18, 5-10) men's basketball team fell to visiting Radford (18-12, 8-7) by the final of 63-56 on Wednesday evening inside Paul Porter Arena.
The Runnin' Bulldogs placed four scorers in double figures, led by sophomore Darryl Simmons II who poured in a team-high 14 points. Graduate guard Anthony Selden chipped in 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Isaiah Richards and graduate guard Jamaine Mann contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Richards knocked down a three at the top of the key, giving Gardner-Webb an early 13-11 lead at the 13:30 mark of the opening period. However, an old-fashioned three-point play by TJ Nesmith, sparking a 17-5 run by the Highlanders while giving the visitors a double-digit lead, 28-18.
Five straight by the 'Dawgs trimmed the margin to 28-23, but it would be Radford that closed the half outscoring GWU 6-5, taking a 33-27 lead into the break.
That lead ballooned back to double figures before a hoop-and-harm pulled the Runnin' Bulldogs to within 37-33 with five minutes erased off the second half clock. However, the game became back-and-forth as each team traded baskets over the course of 10 minutes of game action.
Simmons knocked down a jumper at the 7:13 mark, closing the deficit to 52-46, but that was as close as the Runnin' Bulldogs would get, eventually dropping the contest 63-56.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 1, traveling to Clinton, S.C. to face the Blue Hose of Presbyterian. Tip time is slated for 2 p.m.
Prior to the contest, head coach Jeremy Luther and the Gardner-Webb men's basketball honored Ademide Badmus, Jamaine Mann, Isaiah Richards, and Anthony Selden for their contributions to Runnin' Bulldogs basketball.
