Duchscherer Nets Game-High Four Goals; Westbrook Collects Game-Winner in Runnin' Bulldogs First Win of the Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Junior midfielder Emma Duchscherer scored a game-high four goals while leading the Gardner-Webb (1-9, 1-1) women's lacrosse team to its first win of the season after taking down visiting Longwood (0-8, 0-1) by the final of 14-12 on Saturday afternoon inside Spangler Stadium.

Freshman attack Jules Brown produced her first collegiate hat trick as she netted three scores to go along with one assist. Redshirt senior attack Rebecca Ferrina earned her first multi-goal game of the season, pushing two past the keeper in the win. Freshman attack Katie Westbrook posted a pair of goals of her own, including the game-winner with three minutes to play.

Sophomore goalie Emma Anderon tallied her first win with the Runnin' Bulldogs after arguably the best game of her college career, turning away 11 shots to go along with a game-high six groundballs.

The early portion of the game was a back-and-forth affair with Ella Grace Bishop pushing across the first goal of the game while knotting the score at 1-1. After Longwood posted the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead, Brown got in the scoring column while sparking a 4-0 burst by the 'Dawgs over the final 5:40 of the first quarter.

Longwood put a stop to the run by scoring the next two goals, but Gianna Nardini and Duchscherer went back-to-back in less than a minute while propelling Gardner-Webb back ahead 7-5 with 6:44 remaining before halftime.

The Lancers looked as if they would notch the final score of the half as Madison Rogers snuck the ball in goal with 55 seconds left on the clock, however, Ferrina used a brilliant move at goal seconds later, giving GWU an 8-6 lead heading to the break.

Longwood evened the score at 8-8 with the first two goals of the second half before Ferrina was at it again, blasting home her second goal of the game with less than six minutes to play in the third quarter. The final two goals of the period were exchanged with the latter score by Bishop pushing the Runnin' Bulldogs back ahead 10-9 entering the final frame.

Brown cushioned the lead to start the fourth, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity, but Longwood battled back with three straight to earn its first lead of the fourth, 12-11.

Looking for its first win of the season, GWU's Duchscherer split the pipes at the 3:26 mark to tie the score at 12-all before Westbrook gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish, scoring a free position goal just 23 ticks later. Duchscherer padded the lead with a late insurance goal as Gardner-Webb walked away with the 14-12 win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to Spangler Stadium on Wednesday, April 2, playing host to the Mercer Bears at 4 p.m.
