BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Freshman Katie Westbrook scored a career-high five goals, leading the Gardner- Webb University (3-13, 3-5) women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over Radford (2-14, 0-8) on Saturday afternoon at Spangler Stadium.
Gianna Nardini tallied a hat-trick for the Runnin' Bulldogs while Rebecca Ferrina posted a pair of scores. Jules Brown acted as the top facilitator for the 'Dawgs after dishing out a career-best four assists to go along with one goal. Emma Duchscherer tacked on a trio of dimes and one score.
Gardner- Webb went down a quick to start the first quarter, but the 'Dawgs came back with a goal of their own from Ferrina, assisted by Brown before the Highlanders came back with a goal while regaining the advantage midway through the period.
However, the Runnin' Bulldogs did not let that bother them as Duchscherer took it on her own, scoring a goal, knotting the score at 2-2. Radford closed out the quarter with an additional goal, leading 3-2 after one.
GWU came out strong to start the second quarter, collecting a goal by Brown after a beautiful find by Duchscherer. Nardini decided to add onto the score with a goal which was assisted by Ella Grace Bishop. Emma Meyer got in on the scoring barrage with a free position goal at the 11-minute mark of the second quarter.
Another free position goal, this time by Ferrina, her second score of the day, pushed the lead to 6-3. Katie Westbrook went back-to-back with Brown, extending the unanswered scoring run to six straight by the 'Dawgs while the home team took an 8-3 margin into the halftime intermission.
Radford came out strong to start the second half with a quick goal cutting the lead down to 8-4. Westbrook and Brown connected for the third time on the day, bringing the lead back to five (9-4). The Highlanders did not let that shot by the 'Dawgs deter them, pushing across four in row while trimming the GWU lead to 9-8.
However, the Runnin' Bulldogs answered the call with a critical 3-0 scoring run over the next eight minutes of game action as Westbrook continued her scoring prowess, scoring two of the final three goals of the period as Nardini collected the other, taking a 12-8 lead into the final stanza.
Scoring was limited during the fourth quarter as Radford outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 2-1, but it would be Gardner-Webb that walked away with a 13-10 win.
