Ochieng Scores Twice as No. 18 Gardner-Webb Cruises Past Lipscomb, 3-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman forward Javan Ochieng tallied a pair of goals while sophomore Yves Vaage turned in his first score as a member of the Gardner-Webb (6-1) team as the Runnin' Bulldogs lead wire-to-wire in a 3-nil win over Lipscomb on Tuesday evening.

Gardner-Webb wasted no time putting pressure on the Bisons defense as sophomore forward Lewis Johnson put the first shot on goal less than 20 seconds into the first half. The Runnin' Bulldogs looked poised to push ahead in the 17th minute, but Johnson's strike was pushed away by Lipscomb's keeper.

The Bisons did not obtain their first shot until the 26th minute, but nothing on target as the score remained even in a scoreless tie. However, the Dawgs would not be denied in the 35th minute as Ochieng found the back of the net for his second score of the season after a beautiful find from Johnson.

The momentum remained in favor of GWU during the early part of the second half as a pair of shots hit the target but could not sneak over the line, including a key defensive save that preserved the one goal deficit.

The relentless pressure paid off for Gardner-Webb at the 54:24 mark of the contest as Ochieng received a pass from Yves Vaage in the box before bending it around the defender and into the bottom left corner of the net for his second score of the game and a 2-0 Runnin' Bulldogs lead.

That score proved to be more than enough, but Gardner-Webb added a goal for good measure in the 84th minute after Vaage posted his first goal of his Runnin' Bulldogs career with Robbie Lyons collecting the assist.

Gardner-Webb returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 20, playing host to the Eagles of Winthrop in the Big South Conference opener. Kick off for that contest is slated for 6 p.m.
