BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The home run ball accounted for three of four runs for Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, but the Runnin' Bulldogs fell 15-4 to High Point in the final game of a three-game Big South series at John Henry Moss Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (13-15, 3-6 Big South) recorded six hits on the afternoon, highlighted by two home runs that briefly kept the Runnin' Bulldogs within striking distance.
After High Point opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, Gardner-Webb responded in the third. Merik Carter launched a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1. The Panthers answered with a three-run fourth inning to regain control, but the Runnin' Bulldogs again trimmed the deficit in the bottom half of the frame.
In the fifth inning, Matt Ilgenfritz delivered the biggest swing of the day for Gardner-Webb, blasting a two-run home run that cut the High Point lead to 6-4. However, the Panthers responded immediately and steadily added to their advantage over the final four innings.
Carter led the Runnin' Bulldogs offensively with a 2-for-3 performance that included the home run, an RBI, and a run scored. Ilgenfritz added two RBIs on his fifth-inning homer, while Kelvin Agosto also recorded two hits.
On the mound, Anthony Hausner took the loss after allowing six runs over 4.2 innings while striking out one. Jerek Hobb and Colby Humphries combined to finish the final 4.1 innings of relief.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Tuesday, March 31 as they travel to face the Aggies of North Carolina A&T in a mid-week matchup. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
