GREENSBORO, N.C. - Gardner-Webb (13-16) baseball battled back offensively after an early deficit but ultimately fell 16–6 to the North Carolina A&T (8-18) Tuesday evening at War Memorial Stadium in midweek action.
North Carolina A&T jumped out to a quick lead with a nine-run first inning, collecting nine hits in the frame to take control early. The Aggies added another run in the second to extend the margin to 10–1 before Gardner-Webb began to chip away offensively.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning when Jude Littrell delivered an RBI single to bring home Matt Ilgenfritz, cutting into the deficit. Gardner-Webb's biggest swing of the night came in the third inning when Drew Ripepi launched a three-run home run to right field, scoring Ryan Kennell and Kelvin Agosto to trim the Aggies' lead to 10–4.
Ripepi finished the night with three RBIs to lead the Gardner-Webb offense. Littrell added two RBIs in the effort for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb continued to push across runs later in the game. Littrell drove in another run with a groundout in the sixth after Ector reached and advanced on an error, and Kennell scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to bring the Bulldogs within 13–6.
On the mound, Connor Busson took the loss after starting the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs used multiple relievers throughout the contest, with Trey Graydon providing two innings of work and striking out two while allowing one run.
North Carolina A&T added three runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a three-RBI triple off the bat of Ryan Allen, to secure the 16–6 final.
Gardner-Webb will return to the diamond on April 2-4, traveling for Big South action at UNC Asheville. Game one of the three-game set is slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
