STILLWATER, Okla. — Gardner-Webb (10-5) battled throughout Saturday afternoon at O'Brate Stadium but came up just short in a 4–2 setback to Oklahoma State (10-4).
Oklahoma State jumped in front early with runs in the first and second innings before adding another in the fourth to build a 3–0 lead. Gardner-Webb starter
Matt Stuart worked through four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Gardner-Webb answered in the fifth inning.
Zack Thompson and
Thad Ector each came around to score as the Bulldogs collected timely hits to cut the deficit to 3–2.
Matt Ilgenfritz and
Allan Camarillo each drove in a run during the rally, while
Kelvin Agosto added one of his two hits on the day to help spark the offense.
The Cowboys responded with a solo home run from TP Wentworth in the seventh inning to extend the lead back to two runs.
Gardner-Webb's bullpen kept the game within reach.
Josh Gentile,
Nick Blaszczak, and
Brendan Lysik combined to allow just one run across the final four innings while striking out four.
At the plate, the Runnin' Bulldogs finished with six hits, led by Agosto's two-hit performance. Thompson and Ector each scored a run, while Camarillo also contributed a hit and an RBI.
Gardner-Webb threatened late but was unable to push across the tying run as Oklahoma State's bullpen closed the door in the ninth.
Gardner-Webb and Oklahoma State will close out its three-game set on Sunday, March 8 with the rubber match. First pitch from O'Brate Stadium is slated for 1 p.m. CST.
