Runnin' Bulldogs Open Series at Radford With 8-4 Defeat

RADFORD, Va. - Gardner-Webb (17-21, 5-8) jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off a mid-game surge from Radford (17-17, 6-7), falling 8–4 on Thursday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium in Radford, Virginia.

Gardner-Webb (17–21) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the opening inning. Merik Carter sparked the offense with a solo home run to right field to give the Bulldogs an immediate 1–0 lead. Ryan Kennell followed with a double, and Kelvin Agosto kept the momentum going with a single to put runners on the corners. Anthony Hausner drove in the second run with an RBI groundout, and a Radford error allowed another run to score, giving Gardner-Webb a 3–0 advantage after the first inning.

Radford began to chip away in the third inning, plating two runs on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3–2. Gardner-Webb starter Oliver Ellison settled back in and navigated through traffic over the next two innings before the Highlanders broke through in the fifth.

Radford used a string of hits to produce a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles and productive outs that flipped the score to 6–3 in favor of the home team. The Highlanders added another run in the sixth and one more in the eighth to extend their lead to five.

Ellison worked 7.0 innings for the Runnin' Bulldogs, striking out five while allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits. Jerek Hobb came on in relief and struck out two over the final inning.

Offensively, Gardner-Webb finished with seven hits. Hausner led the way with two hits and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the ninth inning that capped the scoring. Carter also homered and scored a run, while Kennell doubled and scored in the opening frame.

Despite the early offensive burst, the Runnin' Bulldogs were held scoreless from the second through the eighth inning as Radford starter Raymond Ladd struck out seven across seven innings to earn the win. Gardner-Webb threatened late but was unable to mount a full comeback.

Game two of the series will take place tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
