RADFORD, Va. - The Gardner-Webb (18-21, 6-8) baseball team erased an early deficit with an explosive offensive performance and a dominant outing from the bullpen to defeat Radford (17-18, 6-8) 15–10, on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.
Gardner-Webb collected 15 runs on 15 hits in a back-and-forth contest before pulling away late. The Dawgs struck for two runs in the top of the first after Kelvin Agosto and Anthony Hausner delivered RBI hits.
However, Radford jumped ahead with four runs in the first inning and added another in the second to take a 5–2 lead. The Highlanders extended the advantage to 8–5 after four innings, but the Runnin' Bulldogs steadily chipped away before taking control in the middle innings.
Agosto led the offensive surge with a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles, five runs scored and four RBIs. His power display helped spark the Gardner-Webb offense as the Runnin' Bulldogs plated three runs in the third inning and continued to pressure Radford pitching throughout the afternoon.
Drew Ripepi also delivered a big performance, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs. Hausner added two hits and two RBIs, while Ryan Kennell recorded two hits and drove in a run. Daniel Smith contributed three RBIs as Gardner-Webb consistently produced with runners on base.
After a tough start from the Runnin' Bulldogs' starter, the bullpen changed the momentum of the game. Colby Putnam was outstanding in relief, tossing six innings and allowing just two runs, both unearned, while striking out two to earn the win. Putnam kept Radford's offense quiet down the stretch, giving Gardner-Webb the opportunity to rally.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh before breaking things open in the ninth with four runs to seal the victory.
Game three will take place on Sunday, April 19 with a first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
