FARMVILLE, Va. - Gardner-Webb used a dominant second quarter and balanced scoring effort to earn an 11–9 road victory over Longwood on Friday afternoon at EBJ Field.
The Runnin' Bulldogs improved to 2-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play after overcoming an early deficit. Longwood struck first and eventually built a 4–3 lead at the end of the opening quarter despite two early goals from Emma Duchscherer and a free-position score from Maddie Tredway.
Longwood briefly extended the lead to 5–3 early in the second period, but Gardner-Webb responded with one of its strongest stretches of the season. Tredway sparked the run with back-to-back goals to tie the game, and the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to build momentum behind scores from McKensie Gehris and Jazmyn Morris. Addi Cook and Katie Westbrook each found the net in the final two minutes of the half, helping Gardner-Webb close the period on a 6–0 run and take a 9–5 advantage into halftime.
Gardner-Webb maintained control in the third quarter when Duchscherer completed her hat trick off an assist from Jules Brown to push the lead to five at 10–5. Longwood managed one goal in the period, but the Bulldogs' defense and possession game kept the Lancers from building momentum.
Westbrook added another key goal early in the fourth quarter on a free-position opportunity to give the Runnin' Bulldogs their largest lead at 11–6. Longwood attempted a late comeback with three goals in the final eight minutes, but Gardner-Webb held firm defensively to secure the two-goal victory.
Duchscherer and Tredway led the Bulldogs with three goals each, while Westbrook added two scores. Gehris, Morris, and Cook each contributed a goal in the balanced offensive effort. Brown paced the attack with three assists.
In goal, Emma Anderson delivered a strong performance with 11 saves to help preserve the win. The Runnin' Bulldogs also controlled the draw circle, finishing with a 15–7 advantage, led by Tredway's 11 draw controls.
Gardner-Webb finished with 25 shots and matched Longwood with 11 saves while also winning the ground ball battle 21–18 in the contest.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, April 22 while playing host to High Point inside Spangler Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
