HARRISONBURG, Va. – Gardner-Webb (0-1) battled James Madison (1-1) through a scoreless opening half Monday night at Sentara Park before the Dukes scored twice in the second half to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 setback.

Gardner-Webb created several opportunities throughout the contest, finishing with 13 shots, including six on target. The Runnin' Bulldogs also earned four corner kicks and kept James Madison goalkeeper Erik Jaspers busy with six saves.

Goalkeeper Oliver Weng turned in a strong performance for Gardner-Webb, recording two saves while playing all 90 minutes.

The Runnin' Bulldogs generated four shots during the opening 45 minutes and held the Dukes off the scoreboard to take a scoreless draw into halftime. Axel-Ambroise Gravel, Bashir Mansur and Titus Knoche each tested the James Madison defense during the opening period, with Gravel and Mansur forcing saves from Jaspers.

James Madison broke through in the 53rd minute when Manuel Lolas found the back of the net, giving the Dukes a 1-0 advantage. Chris Niblock and Brock Frasier were credited with assists on the opening goal.

The Dukes added to their lead in the 63rd minute when Hakon Rake scored off an assist from Niblock.

Gardner-Webb continued to push offensively following the second goal. Four different Runnin' Bulldogs put shots on frame during the final 25 minutes, but Jaspers made a series of saves to preserve the shutout.

Knoche led Gardner-Webb with three shots, while Mansur, Hohmann and Triguero each recorded two attempts. Biaggi and Gravel each added a shot on target.

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Friday, August 28, facing the Wildcats of Davidson while looking to bounce back from Monday's result. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside Greene-Harbison Stadium.
