Runnin' Bulldogs Drop Conference Opener in Close Battle with High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team was locked in a close battle with High Point Saturday evening the Big South Conference opener for both teams at Vert Stadium.Â
Antony Alexis scored his first goal of the season but a late goal from the Panthers proved to be the difference as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell 2-1. Gardner-Webb is now 1-3-1 overall and 0-1 in Conference play while High Point improves to 4-3-1 and 1-0 in league play.
The Panthers got on the board early with a goal in the ninth minute before the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with Alexis' goal via an assist from Nicolas Triguero.
The two teams battled well into the second half but another Panther goal in the final 10 minutes was the decider.Â
The Runnin' Bulldogs finished with 16 shots on the match led by four from Axel Ambroise-Gravel. Oliver Weng finished with three saves for Gardner-Webb.Â
High Point takes a 2-1 lead late in the second half on an 80th minute goal from Alfred Baafi, his 2nd of the season. Gardner-Webb finished the game with 16 shots and 3 saves. Number 28 Blanchar Mulamba picked up a yellow card in the 30th minute. Gardner-Webb moves to 0-1-0 in conference play with a 2-1 loss to High Point.
The Runnin' Bulldogs head back on the road to face will be UAB on Wednesday, September 23. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. Eastern start.
