Runnin’ Bulldogs Drop Match with Wofford in Five-Set Thriller

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — It took five sets to decide a winner as the Gardner-Webb volleyball team took on Wofford Tuesday evening at Paul Porter Arena. Despite a valiant effort, the Runnin' Bulldogs fell 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11) to the Terriers. Gardner-Webb is now 9-5 on the season while Wofford is 7-5.
Samia Sayd and Peyton Slone led Gardner-Webb with 11 and 10 kills, respectively while Caroline Franklin added nine kills and a pair of service aces. Olivia Lefebvre and Aleina Manaois finished with 21 and 20 assists, respectively, to lead the team.
Ella Moss was one of four Runnin' Bulldogs with double-digit digs, leading the team with 20.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind in the first set 13-9 and rallied with a 7-2 run to capture the lead. Gardner-Webb closed the first set strong with a 7-3 run after Wofford rallied to tie the set at 18-all.
After Wofford took the second set, Gardner-Webb bounced back with an 8-1 run early on in the third set to take control. The run was highlighted by blocks from Milla Lugo and Samia Sayd. Lugo finished with five blocks (two solo, three assisted) to lead the team. The Runnin' Bulldogs led by as many as eight points in the third set at 19-11 before the Terriers got back within a point late. Gardner-Webb held on thanks to kills from Sayd and Kiera Vazquez to close out the set.
Wofford got off to a fast 6-1 start in the fourth set but the Runnin' Bulldogs kept fighting and got back within two points in the fourth set before the Terriers pulled the match even at two sets each.
The fifth set saw the Runnin' Bulldogs jump out to a 4-2 lead to start but an 8-2 run from the Terriers proved to be the difference to take the match.
Gardner-Webb opens Big South Conference play Saturday with a match at 4 p.m. against Winthrop from Paul Porter Arena.
