Runnin' Bulldogs Look to Bounce Back at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb University football team looks to bounce back on Saturday against Wofford on Saturday at Gibbs Stadium, September 5th. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
Gardner-Webb enters the contest looking for its first win of the season after falling to nationally ranked Austin Peay in the season opener 35-17.
Despite the setback, the Runnin' Bullodgs found success particularly through the air as Cole Pennington threw for 312 yards on 27 of 49 pass attempts and one touchdown. Pennington's 312 passing yards marked a strong start to the season as Gardner-Webb finished the game with 344 yards of total offense. Junior wide receiver Kory Jones led the Runnin' Bulldogs receving attack in the opener, hauling in 9 passes for 102 yards. Jalile Bost provided a big-play threat, recording two receptions for 63 yards, including a 43 yard touchdown reception.
Gardner-Webb will look to establish a more consistent rushing attack this weekend against the Terriers after being held to just 32 yards on the ground on 20 attempts. Christian Vann led the Runnin' Bulldogs rushing attack with 15 yards while Adrian Cormier added 11 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Defensively Gardner-Webb recorded 10 tackles for loss and three sacks against Austin Peay. Tre Yanez led the team in total tackles with 13, while Cahari Haynes recorded 10 tackles and one sack. Sabin McLaughlin recorded five tackles including two tackles for loss, while Preston Hamilton finished with four tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to turn defensive disruptions into stops against a Wofford offense that won their season opener 42-14 against rival, The Citadel.
Wofford enters Saturday with a 1-0 record and will provide another early season challenge for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The Terriers will look to continue their momentum from their season-opening victory, while Gardner-Webb will look to slow them down and and put together a complete game on both sides of the ball.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to sustain drives this weekend as they converted on three of their 13 chances on third down, while also convert two of their five chances on fourth down. Bieng able to keep the offense on the field will be a key factor for Gardner-Webb this weekend.
This matchup will be the 26th time that these two teams have met dating back to 1976 when they first met in Spartanburg. The regional matchup will provide Gardner-Webb with another opportunity to earn their first win of the season and to build momentum heading into the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
