Jim Seacord is in his second season with Coach Ron Dickerson,Jr.’s staff, and his third season coaching at his alma materoveracoach ll.
The veteran will coach the team’s defensive line in 2012,having also held that role in 2006. Seacord coachedGardner-Webb’s tight ends and coordinated the special teamsin 2011.
Before returning to Boiling Springs, Seacord spent fourseasons as an assistant Strength & Conditioning coach at NotreDame. While in South Bend, he helped train the Fighting Irishfootball program in addition to heading up the strength program forwomen’s rowing.
The 1971 Gardner-Webb graduate served as the defensiveline coach for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2006, where he helpeddevelop future NFL draft pick Brian Johnston (Chiefs, 7th round,2008) and mentored second-team All-Big South Conference endThurston Lee.
Johnston was the Big South’s Defensive Player of theYear that season, and earned FCS All-America honors from theAssociated Press and the Football Gazette.
Seacord logged more than 30 years experience coaching onthe high school level in North and South Carolina. He was one ofthe most respected coaches in the Charlotte, N.C., high schoolranks for more than two decades, serving as head coach at SouthMecklenburg (N.C.) High from 1979-1985.
During that time with the Sabres, he forged a 48-26 markand led his squad to a 14-0 record and state title in 1981 –developing a team that is still considered one of the best inMecklenburg County history. Seacord helped develop talentes such asNFL linebacker Roman Phifer and Clemson tailback Stephen Griffinduring his time at South Meck.
After spending time in the college ranks on Coach JoeMorrison’s staff at South Carolina, Seacord returned to thehigh school ranks at Wilmington Hoggard (N.C.) High for threeseasons (1986-1988) – before finding his way back toCharlotte.
Seacord took over at brand new Providence (N.C.) High in1989 and experienced tremendous success from 1989-2000. During thattime he registered 50 wins and led the Panthers to playoff berthsin 1993, 1995 and 1997.
In 1997, Providence won the league title and finished witha solid 10-2 record. The Charlotte Observer named Seacord its 1997Coach of the Year.
He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of two adultdaughters.
