Alvance Robinson is in his first season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb, coaching the program’s talented corps of receivers. Robinson joined the GWU family in February, 2021, prior to the start of the spring season.
Robinson spent the previous two seasons at Division II powerhouse West Florida, helping the Argos to the 2019 National Championship. The 2020 Division II fall season was postponed.
Prior to joining the West Florida program, Robinson spent four years on the college level coaching at Davenport (Mich.) University and at Marietta (Ohio) College.
In two seasons at Davenport, he helped improve the Panther offense in every statistical passing category. The offense averaged 200 passing yards per game and a 53 percent completion rate in 2018. He coached 2018 All-GLIAC wide receiver/return specialist Nate Couturier and 2018 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention wide receiver Keion Powers. Both were back-to-back offensive team MVP's in 2017 and 2018. He also mentored current Arena Football League (AFL) wide receiver Rashad Still.
Robinson spent the 2015 and 2016 campaigns an assistant coach at Marietta College, also coaching the wideouts. He recruited future (2018) all-conference defensive end Kyle Gallagher for the Pioneers.
From 2007-14, he enjoyed a successful career playing in the Arena Football League following a year where he signed as a free agent with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
Following a year with Saskatchewan, Robinson moved indoors where he played eight seasons in the AFL, making one ArenaBowl appearance in 2013 with the Philadelphia Soul. He also played for the Grand Rapids Rampage, Milwaukee Iron, OKC Yardawgz, Utah Blaze and Portland Thunder. Robinson earned Second Team All-Arena Football League honors in 2007-08. His career stats included 3,247 receiving yards on 249 receptions with 62 touchdowns. He also had 1,794 kick return yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Robinson worked out for several NFL teams including the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals.
Robinson was a four-year standout at Alabama State from 2002-05. He became the fourth wide receiver in ASU history to surpass 1,000 yards in a single season in 2005 with 1,063 yards on 63 receptions. Robinson helped the Hornets to back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game appearances in 2003 and 2004, winning the title in 2004.
In 2005, he was named a Second Team All-American and First Team All-SWAC wide receiver. Robinson tied the ASU single-season record with 12 touchdown receptions in 2005. He finished his Hornet career with 93 receptions, 1,440 yards and 13 touchdowns.
He returned to ASU to earn his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in recreational therapy in 2018.
Robinson is from Dayton, Ohio where he was a three-sport athlete attending Meadowdale High School. The 2001 graduate played quarterback, wide receiver, and cornerback garnering all-league honors his junior season and senior season.
